Take a detour off the Gibb River Road four wheel drive (4WD) track and head deep into Kimberley wilderness areas few have experienced. Hike and fly by helicopter to one of Australia’s most scenic landmarks – Mitchell Falls, camp under the starriest skies and fish the richest waters. A 4WD is highly recommended and some unsealed roads may be inaccessible during the wet season (September to May). Drivers are advised to contact the visitor centres in Broome, Derby or Kununurra to check road conditions before making the journey.
BEFORE YOU BEGIN:
You can start your Gibb River Road 4WD adventure with a direct flight to the exotic pearling port of Broome (from Perth, Sydney, Melbourne or Brisbane) or the eastern gateway to the Kimberley, Kununurra (from Perth and Melbourne).
Exploring the west Kimberley from Broome, you’ll get to immerse yourself in some of the Kimberley’s most spectacular gorge country. It’s an easy three-hour journey to Derby to stock up on fuel, food and water for your first full day on the Gibb. Plan overnight stops at Windjana, Bell and Manning gorges on your way to and from the Kalumburu Road Junction and the North Kimberley.
If you’re driving from Kununurra, you’ll enter the epic landscapes of Kimberley station country. Be sure to spend a night or two at El Questro Wilderness Park and Home Valley Station on your way to and from the Kalumburu Road.
You’ll need to allow at least 14 days to enjoy all that the legendary Gibb has to offer, or at least 10 days to travel half the trail to the remote North Kimberley and back....
